ABOUT ME
Filmmaker
Hi, I'm Jessalyn Chua. You can call me Jess. I am small town girl from Kuching, Sarawak who loves her dogs and her Sunday morning Sarawak Laksa and Kopi Peng (iced coffee). As a huge Yasmin Ahmad fan, I believe that filmmaking possess the power to articulate the little wonderful things in life that we often take for granted. I am driven to learn the tools and skills of filmmaking to evoke emotions that transcend the audiovisual medium and all cultural barriers.
Through working on my short documentary (Sarawak Laksa) and other smaller projects, I can confidently say that I am highly motivated in practicing my craft in filmmaking especially on personal and cultural themes. Apart from working on my own visions, I also enjoy supporting others in achieving their creative visions. In productions, I make it a priority to be organised and take initiative in finding creative opportunities and problem-solving instead of freezing up in the face of a challenge.
With my prior experience of working as an intern in a small scale production company, I have grasped the basic skill of flexibility in taking up multiple roles. Familiar with the roles of producing, content creating, production assisting and editing through a summer internship and working on personal projects; I believe that I could be of value to my team with my proactivity to assist and practice any skill in film and video productions. I understand that communication is key in film production (and any work, in fact), I am fluent in English and Mandarin while equipped with an adequate level of Bahasa Malaysia to communicate with team members.
Looking for valuable full-time work opportunities, I aim to put my film practice skills to the test and improve upon it while producing good art. Interested to work in film, TV and documentary productions with cultural themes but I'm open to try anything!
And if you're wondering: no, I am not your typical film student so I haven't watched every movie yet :/
My ultimate fav filmmakers 💗: Yasmin Ahmad, Celine Sciamma, Agnes Varda, Wong Kar Wai.
